Human Foods to NOT give your animal
Dogs
- Alcohol can cause vomiting, central nervous system depression, diarrhea, tremors, coma, difficulty breathing, and maybe even death.
- Chocolate, Coffee, and Caffeine can cause vomiting, excessive thirst, diarrhea, seizures, panting, and maybe even death. When it comes to chocolate, the darker the chocolate the more dangerous it is.
- Citrus can cause irritation and in small amounts can cause an upset stomach.
- Coconut and Coconut Oil can cause upset stomach and loose stools or diarrhea.
- Grapes and Raisins can cause kidney failure.
- Macadamia Nuts can cause depression, weakness, tremors, vomiting, and hypothermia. Symptoms/signs usually appear within 12 hours and can last for 12 to 48 hours.
- Nuts can cause pancreatitis since they are high in oils and fats.
- Onions, Garlic, and Chives can cause gastrointestinal irritation and lead to red blood cell damage.
- Raw or under cooked meat and eggs contain bacteria like Salmonella and E coli. Raw eggs contain an enzyme which decreases a B vitamin that can lead to skin and coat problems as well as blocks the ability to absorb certain nutrients.
- Cooked bones can splinter which can cause choking and become lodged in the pet’s digestive tracts that can possibly be punctured.
- Salt or Salty foods can cause excessive urination, excessive thirst, and even sodium ion poisoning which is shown by depression, vomiting , tremors, diarrhea, and elevated body temperature.
- Artificial sweeteners can lead to liver failure as well as hypoglycemia which is low blood sugar levels.
- Yeast Dough causes gas which can be painful as well as causing the stomach to bloat and possibly twist which is incredibly life threatening.
Cats
- Alcohol can cause severe liver and brain damage as well as cardiac arrest, induced coma, slowed respiratory rates, and even death.
- Chocolate can cause heart problems, muscle tremors, seizures, as well as excessive fluid loss from vomiting and diarrhea.
